Case study: From Grief to Hope: A Young Voice Leading the Way in Children’s Mental Health

Born at North Tees Hospital and raised in Fairfield, Stockton, Daisy lost her father, Daley Mathison, a professional motorbike racer, in a tragic crash when she was just 3 years old. Daisy’s mother Natalie was left to navigate the emotional and financial aftermath with little to no support.
“Support was non-existent. I was left on my own with a 3-year-old. Daisy was overwhelmed with emotions, her behaviour changed a lot, and I didn’t know where to turn.”

In 2024, Daisy joined a new children’s group counselling programme at Teesside Hospice, where she found a safe space to explore her grief alongside other children. The programme also provided a separate support group for parents , a lifeline for families navigating loss.
Daisy had previously received limited school-based support around age 5, but that ended abruptly and was never resumed.
Now, Daisy has written a children’s book titled “Hugsy Brightheart – The Missing Star” a gentle, heartfelt story designed to help other grieving children feel seen, understood, and less alone.
Through her words, Daisy is sharing not just her experience, but also a message of kindness and compassion, showing others that even in sadness, we can help each other heal. Daisy is an inspiration, reminding us that everyone has a purpose, and everyone can help others.
“Daisy’s story shows how vital it is to listen to children, support them early, and empower them to express their feelings in healthy, creative ways. Her voice is a powerful reminder of why young people’s mental health must remain a priority.”

The book was launched on Father’s Day in memory of Daisy’s dad and has already touched hearts across the region.
The case study highlights the real-life impact of mental health challenges on children and families, and the transformative power of early, compassionate support. Daisy’s experience highlights the importance of:
- Accessible mental health services for children and young people
- Creative outlets for emotional expression
- Peer and family support networks
- Listening to lived experience to shape better services
