Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees Report Highlights Urgent Need for Equitable Cancer Care Across Tees Valley

Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees has published a new report capturing the voices of 71 individuals who have accessed cancer services across Tees Valley. The findings reveal both strengths and systemic challenges in the delivery of personalised cancer care, including unequal access to financial support, emotional wellbeing services, and transport.

The report aligns with national concerns raised by Healthwatch England, which highlight growing disparities in cancer care across the country.

Locally, Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees has worked closely with the Integrated Care Board (ICB), Trusts, and community partners to ensure these insights inform real change.

“This report is a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a person. Our independence allows us to reach those whose voices are often missed, and we’re proud to see our findings being used to shape better care across Tees Valley.

"Together with the Trust and system partners, we can make big changes, especially for those most disadvantaged.”

Natasha Douglas, Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees Manager and Healthwatch Tees Valley NENC Representative

The ICB has responded positively, confirming that Healthwatch’s insights are informing strategic commissioning, workforce development, and mental health initiatives. New services such as the Stockton Wellbeing Hub and targeted screening programmes are already underway.
