Access to NHS Dental Care in Stockton-on-Tees and surrounding areas - patient leaflet
NHS England is responsible for securing provision of NHS dental services to meet the needs of the local population. We appreciate that the decision by Queensway to stop providing NHS dental care from the end of March 2018 may cause some concern, but would like to reassure patients that there are other NHS dental practices in the surrounding areas currently accepting NHS patients.
We are also urgently exploring options on how we can increase access for patients in the short term whilst we undertake a procurement process to secure longer term dental provision within the Billingham area.
Unlike general medical practice (accessing a GP) there is no patient registration for dental services. Patients are free to access their dental care from any NHS provider who has capacity available to undertake treatment.
To assist with access, minimise waiting times and avoid paying unnecessary patient charges (where applicable*), it would be helpful If you could wait until your next routine appointment is due before contacting an NHS practice, unless you require urgent dental treatment.
We have included a list of all practices within the surrounding areas who have recently advised they have capacity to offer NHS appointments. Please note that availability of appointments can fluctuate throughout the year, therefore we would advise that you access NHS Choices (https://www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/Dentist/LocationSearch/3) for details of all NHS dental practices and their most up to date position.
Access to urgent and emergency dental treatment can be obtained by ringing NHS 111.
The Tees Community Dental Services provides dental treatment for adults and children with special needs, and for patients who are housebound or cannot access general dental practices due to physical, mental or medical reasons.
Should you have any difficulties accessing NHS dental treatment, or require further information, please contact Healthwatch Stockton on Tees on Freephone 0808 1729559 or via email on email@example.com.
* NHS dental treatment is free for children under 18 and adults who meet the NHS eligibility criteria see NHS Choices for details:https://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Dentalcosts.aspx
